Over the past 18 months, many of us have welcomed a new four-legged friend to our homes as the Kennel Club has seen the number of dog owners increase by almost 8% from 2020.
But with 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, there is a lot of thought to be done before selecting your perfect puppy.
There’s even academic advice to seek out, with psychologist Stanley Coren’s book “The Intelligence of Dogs†categorizing breeds by instinct, obedience, and adaptability.
One dog that often appears at the top of people’s canine wishlists is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier – they were one of the UK’s 10 most popular dog breeds in 2020 and have a range of positive attributes that make them an excellent pet.

Like all breeds of bulls, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier can trace its heritage back to the Molossian War Dogs of the now extinct Greeks, a breed that was popular over 2,500 years ago.

In 2018, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) campaigned for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier to be added to the list of restricted dog breeds. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, The Kennel Club, Dogs Trust, Blue Cross and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home all opposed the proposal, which was quickly rejected.
