When the lockdown hit last year, leaving most of us stranded at home, many decided it was the perfect time to get a new puppy – with the UK Kennel Club reporting an increase of nearly 8% of the number of dog owners in the UK compared to the previous year.
With 215 breeds of different pedigrees recognized by the UK Kennel Club, as well as many popular crosses, there is no shortage of choice when it comes to selecting your perfect dog.
But some breeds are rarer in parks than others.
Here are the most popular dog breeds for the first quarter of 2021, according to the latest Kennel Club figures – and there is a new UK lead dog in town.

The French Bulldog may have lost his crown of most popular dog last year (he was the best in 2019, before dropping a spot in 2020), but he’s leading the charge this year. With 13,600 Kennel Club registrations in the first quarter of 2021, he is the most popular dog of the year to date.

The best dog of 2020 came down to second, with 13,562 Labrador Retrievers registered in the first three months of 2021. The Labradors were originally imported to the UK from Canada.

With 8,024 registrations in the first quarter of 2021, the Cocker Spaniel is so far the third most popular dog of the year. Cocker Spaniels can actually be one of two distinct breeds – the American Cocker Spaniel or the English Cocker Spaniel.

With 3,673 registrations between January and March 2021, the Bulldog is fourth in popularity. The Bulldog was one of the breeds that thrived during the lockdown – with demand rising almost 20%.
