David’s Day supports animal shelters and honors pet taxi drivers

SPRING HILL, Kan. – There is not a day that goes by Always & Furever Midwest Wildlife Sanctuary without thinking of David Hosch who would transport their animals from one place to another.

“And what he meant to all of us, and not just here at the barn as a volunteer but as a person, oh, he was funny. He had wit,” said Konni Knabe, volunteer at Always & Furever.

In July, the 39-year-old pet taxi driver died in an accident along with Annabelle, one of the sanctuary dogs he was taking to the vet on that fateful day.

Before the tragic accident, Hosch had planned to take an eight-day bike ride through Kansas to raise funds to help dogs and support shelters in rural areas.

“We were going to have cars that would follow him with the donations and then stop along the way,” said Amy Stoecker, another Always & Furever volunteer.

Hosch’s vision is now realized by his friends, including Knabe who made a memorial drive to the crash site last Sunday.

“It’s for David, it’s to carry out this mission that animals need a home and they need to be cared for,” Knabe said.

They call this Saturday “The day of David.”

Volunteers will visit animal shelters in small communities with donations.

They encourage others to do the same.

“So we kind of wanted to hit whatever he was going to do although obviously it wasn’t the way we all wanted it to be,” Stoecker said.

“David’s Day” is just one way for them to honor it. At Kennedy’s Animal Clinic in Raytown, they pay homage to him in one of the rooms and another is underway.

It’s a little light that is in the room where people say their last goodbyes to their pets.

“To help people understand that David is at the Rainbow Bridge, ready to guide and support their loved one as they cross the Rainbow Bridge,” said Shannon Smith of Kansas City English Bulldog Rescue.

Smith helps bring a mural to the clinic that will have a message encapsulating Hosch’s legacy.

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind, because that’s the only thing David was ever – was kind – kind to animals, kind to other human beings,” Smith said.

Now there is a day dedicated in his name to spread kindness.
