San Marcos animal rights activists are asking for help as some dogs could be euthanized if they are not moved soon

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) – Animal rights activists are scrambling after hearing that the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter must find a new location for 35 dogs by Friday due to the kennel renovation. Eight of them risk being euthanized otherwise.

The city of San Marcos is under scrutiny, accused of not sufficiently publicizing the deadline which is fast approaching. The city says it has been proactive in trying to clean up the shelter.

Jennifer Hayes has volunteered to take photos at the shelter for three years now. On Wednesday, the snapshots conveyed more urgency.

“I am making an urgent appeal for people to come in to adopt, to offer to foster, to share this information,” said Hayes.

Hayes captured the personalities of the eight dogs at risk of being euthanized on Friday.

“I asked at the animal shelter meeting last week what their plan was,” Hayes said. “The response I got from a city representative was that they were going to offer a special adoption offer.”

The city of San Marcos said it announced plans to renovate the kennel shortly after they were approved by council in early September on its Facebook page. There, he said he also encouraged people to adopt.

According to the city, she also promoted several low-cost adoption events in September and October to help clean up the shelter.

“I actually contacted the city this morning,” Hays County Commissioner Lon Shell said. “I was just wondering if there was something the county could do.

Hays County is trying to help with a quick relocation solution. Meanwhile, he has just approved funding for a study to analyze the feasibility of a regional shelter managed by the county. At present, all homeless animals go to the shelter run by the city of San Marcos.

“There is just a need for space, and as the town of Kyle and the town of Buda develop, it makes it very difficult,” Shell said.

Hayes agrees with the need for a long-term solution, but for now, she’s hoping these photos will motivate someone to help.

The City of San Marcos declined our request for a taped interview but provided the written statement below.
