Rubrik’s Jeffrey Phelan on 4 Steps Agencies Can Take to Protect Data and Computer Networks Against Ransomware

Jeffrey Phelan, director of public sector technology at Rubrik, said agencies need to implement certain best practices to protect data and information technology infrastructure from ransomware attacks and other cyber threats.

Phelan wrote that there are four steps agencies can take to secure data in on-premises and cloud environments and the first is to apply a “logical empty space, which means the backup infrastructure is readily available. but not accessible from the network ”.

Another step that agencies should take is to ensure that their data and file system is immutable and that the backup data is not susceptible to modification or modification. Phelan noted that Rubrik provides an immutable file system based on zero trust for the data management industry.

He also explained that retention lockout and data encryption are the third and fourth steps in securing data.

Phelan said agencies should ensure the retrievability of their data and platforms used to fulfill their critical missions.

“No matter where agencies decide to store this data, they need to be able to access it instantly,” he said. “Minute and hour recovery service level agreements are possible and provided today across government and the Department of Defense. “
