Fox Valley Humane Association full of sick and injured animals

APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) – In recent months, the Fox Valley Humane Association has seen an increase in the number of sick and injured animals returned.

Dr Jim Ziegler, executive director, said the increase has been difficult for staff, resources and their space in general.

“Some days it’s pure desperation. Other days you get up and you get your happy endings and that keeps you going. But some days you’re pretty low, ”he said.

Today, the refuge is at full capacity and houses 86 animals. Of these 86, only a handful are healthy enough to be available for adoption.

“We charged earlier and that didn’t do much. He was less than 10 years old, ”he said.

The facility is also home to several animals with special needs that are adaptable but require a special person to take care of their needs.

“Now, whatever we adopt here, we will be perfectly healthy. It’s our special needs where people have to come into this relationship, find out what they’re getting and be ready to commit to the needs of this animal, ”he said.

The other animals undergo treatment for medical, neurological and behavioral problems. Zeigler said some of the problems require the animals to remain in their care for months.

“I think a lot of people think animals just come and they come out. And that is not easy. Not easy at all, ”he said.

These interminable treatments have also become very expensive for the association. They hope the community will see their struggles and donate to their cause.

“It’s really about the money. I mean you can put thousands of dollars into pet care and a $ 100 adoption fee won’t touch it. So we need the support of the community with donations, ”he said.

Sadly, Zeigler isn’t sure why the number of sick and injured animals has increased and said he didn’t expect that to change anytime soon.

You just have to prepare for it and keep morale up with your successes to keep moving forward because the situation is not going to change. It’s just the life we live here in the humanitarian society, ”he said.
