NBC10 and Telemundo62 announced that more than 5,500 pets have been adopted from area animal shelters and rescues during its Get rid of shelters pet adoption and donation initiative that took place from August 23 to September 19, 2021. Of these, 981 adoptions took place on Saturday, September 18. The campaign’s donation effort, which runs through November 1, has already raised more than $ 7,000 for local shelters and rescues in the Greater Philadelphia area.
Nationwide, the seventh annual NBCUniversal Local Get rid of shelters helped more than 136,000 pets – and more – find new homes. Since its creation in 2015, Get rid of shelters has led to over 31,000 market pet adoptions and over 688,000 adoptions nationwide.
“We are delighted that more than 5,500 animals have found their forever homes with the help of 52 local shelters and rescues in the Philadelphia area,” said Ric Harris, president and CEO of NBC10 and Telemundo62. “On behalf of NBC10 and Telemundo62, we thank and appreciate everyone who adopted and donated, making this year’s Clear the Shelters campaign another great success.
Among the many success stories of this year’s Clear the Shelters campaign is that of Chuck, an 11-year-old Chihuahua that the Brandywine Valley SPCA raised in a southern shelter where older puppies like him are unlikely to succeed. ‘be adopted. Chuck’s adopters spotted him on Brandywine’s Facebook post featuring some of the adoptable animals for the event. The family arrived at 6:30 a.m. at Brandywine’s West Chester location on Saturday, September 18 to be the first in line. The family who adopted Chuck say he has been a “wonderful companion” for their amputee son who currently uses a wheelchair (photo attached).

The 2021 Get rid of shelters was again supported by fundraising partners Greater Good Charities and The Animal Rescue Site, who covered all transaction costs so that 100 percent of donations went directly to shelters and rescues. Virtual pet adoptions have also returned for this year’s campaign via a partner Get rid of shelters WeRescue.
