The Newport Beach Animal Sanctuary is on the verge of becoming a reality, following a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday that officially kicks off construction of the $3 million permanent animal sanctuary.
The shelter is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023.
Newport Beach does not currently have a permanent animal sanctuary. The city largely contracted out its services to vendors, including the Orange County Humane Society, before eventually allowing the use of an existing residential kennel on Riverside Drive for a temporary animal shelter run by wildlife control. city animals.
The permanent shelter will be located nearby at 20282 Riverside. The purchase of the property and construction was paid for by Friends of Newport Beach Animal Sanctuary, which raised approximately $2.7 million with just $350,000 remaining last week to complete construction and begin operations. on the site.
When completed, it will be donated to the City of Newport Beach.
The new facility is expected to include a 1,565 square foot walk-in shelter and a 755 square foot kennel that can house up to 29 dogs. It will also have four front yard parking spaces, new gates and fencing, proper drainage and other upgrades.
It will also be a no kill shelter.
