WATERLOO – Dogs and fireworks don’t mix.
While their humans may celebrate the holidays with bright fireworks and loud explosions, many dogs excessively pant, shake, howl, bark, hide, or run away in panic.
Independence Day is the day when most dogs run away, according to the American Kennel Club.
At the Cedar Bend Humane Society, there is a “huge increase in the number of dogs lost around July 4,” a spokesperson for the shelter‘s medical team said. Additional kennels are being set up as the after-hours waiting areas quickly fill up with lost animals. “Not just for July 4th, but for the days before and after the holidays,” she said.
Dogs who fear thunder may also be afraid of fireworks, but dogs who are not afraid of thunder can be terrified of fireworks, said Roxy Anderson, a specialist in pet behavior and dog trainer, Finishing School for Dogs in Cedar Falls.
“All animals and humans have an instinct to stay away from loud noises. If a dog is outside and fireworks are set off in his neighborhood, he may jump the fence, dig or find a way out. help to get away from the noise, inside they might panic or find a place to hide, ”she explained.
Anxiety about fireworks has worsened over the years, said Dr Tom Taylor of Den Herder Veterinary Hospital in Waterloo. “What we’ve seen is that with each passing year, as the dog gets older, it seems to have a building effect.
