Central Texas animal shelter seeks community help to avoid euthanizing animals

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Animal lives are on the line as shelters struggle to find room for their four-legged friends.

The Humane Society of Central Texas has had a huge influx of animals.

Without a proper place for the animals, they fear they will have to take drastic measures with the shelter narrowly avoiding this situation this week.

“We were at full capacity on Wednesday where we literally had no kennels open and the next dog that came in, they were going to drop off a dog and fill it up,” said Mike Gray of the Humane Society of Central Texas.

The shelter entered “Code Red” because they were overrun.

“I think in the last 3-4 months we’ve been ‘Code Red’ about three or four times,” Gray said.

“I’ve been here for about 3 years and think we’ve only been ‘Code Red’ one more time before this.”

The shelter was able to get 30 dogs out of the shelter and save lives, but the dogs are still filling kennel after kennel.

“We’re around 120 dogs right now, still high,” Gray said.

They look to the community for help. It starts with being a responsible owner.

“The most important thing for you and your dog is to make sure they are spayed or neutered,” Gray said.

“It will reduce the behavioral problems, it will reduce the number of puppies, it will help reduce the number of people at the shelter.”

Gray says the ABC Clinic offers low cost sterilizations and sterilizations.

He also adds that making sure your pet is safe is important. The refuge even offers to help you with your fence.

They are also looking for people to adopt and welcome.

If you’re looking for a new addition to your family and are ready to commit, the Humane Society of Central Texas offers free adoptions until Saturday.

Just be sure to bring anyone living in your household, people and pets.
