Seven fluffy puppies rescued from a cold Saskatchewan landfill in the past few days are warm, fed and healthy, according to an animal rescue in Regina.

Regina’s Bright Eyes Dog Rescue has been told by a member of the community that they have found puppies that they believe were abandoned by a stray dog located at a dumping ground in the province. Megan Jane, spokesperson for the volunteer run dog rescue, said they were not free to reveal her location.

Rescue volunteers went down to the landfill and rounded up three puppies on Friday. They washed and fed them. One of them was so dirty that the volunteers did not find out that it was in fact “shiny white and like snow” until all the grime had been removed from its coat.

On a whim, they returned on Sunday. After exploring the dump, they found four more.

Two of them were relatively easy to put together, she said, but the other two weren’t.

“Often, if they are born in the landfill like that, they’ve never had an interaction before, [they’re] pretty scared, “said Jane.” They’ve never seen a kind human before. “

“I know some of our volunteers were there for a few hours [Sunday], in the freezing cold, dragging through tires, trash, sticks, mud and trees, ”she said.

Jane believes the dogs were outside for several days, but may have survived because of their thick winter coats.

Now the puppies are taken care of by the dog rescue and healthy, said Jane, bathed, fed and pampered in blankets – but still fearful and unsure of what to do with their toys.

If an owner does not show up, the dogs will be treated as rescue dogs, placed in foster care, and then go through the appropriate phases to find a new home. Jane suspects the puppies could be offered for adoption as early as January.

This includes a mandatory two-week medical break, including vaccinations and check-up.

“I think this is the best ending possible for these seven little puppies who could have had a very different future if no one had been to the landfill that day,” said Jane.

The dogs have yet to be given names, but Jane assumes that they will soon be given a title that matches the holiday season or how lucky they are to be found.

This fall and winter season has been the busiest on record for dog rescue. They currently have 120 dogs in their care, Jane said, with around 475 dogs rescued in 2021 to date.
