Golden Retriever Breed ‘GOLDIE’ joins CISF Dog Squad at Mangalore International Airport
Mangaluru: This dog is man’s best friend. But when this friend is part of the canine brigade of the Air Security Group (ASG) of the CISF in charge of the security of the international airport of Mangaluru, then the canine becomes an envoy of God. The unique skills that the dogs on the team possess – to sniff out dangerous goods – make them a handy asset to possess and further enhance the safety of this vital entity.
The latest addition to this team of dogs at MIA is Goldie, a one-year-old Golden Retriever who has joined Jack, Bruno and Julie. Goldie is also the fifth member of this team, which was created on December 16, 2013. The team recently lost the services of Leena, due to an age-related illness. Goldie began active duty with MIA on January 27 after training for six months at the Dog Training School (DTS) in Ranchi.

Goldie with her neat white coat was the center of attention for everyone involved at MIA. Along with his Constable (General Duty) handler Aktarul Hoque, Goldie joined Jack, the eldest member of the now 4-member team with his Police (GD) handler MM Auti on a drive to familiarize himself with the installation on the first day of his duty. Dogs work in shifts with adequate rest.

The masters train, feed and groom the dogs in their spare time. Constables (GD) D Ashok and Manikanta are respectively the project managers of Julie and Bruno. The team is housed in its own kennel near the old Bajpe airport. The ASG has set up an obstacle course and training center adjacent to the kennel so that the dogs are in ship shape to meet any challenges they may face in the line of duty.
