Overwhelmed Lodi no-kill animal shelter pleads with public to stop throwing animals

LODI, Calif. (KTXL) – The Animal Friends Connection Humane Society of Lodi is begging the public to stop leaving kittens at their doorstep as they are at full capacity.

Patricia Sherman has been caring for animals for over 30 years and is the president and co-founder of the AFC.

“I wish they each had a home with someone – a tower to sit on all the time,” Sherman told FOX40. “It’s just the fact that we are saving lives, their beautiful little lives.”

Sherman said the illegal dumping of animals has been a problem for a long time, but reached an all-time high last year.

“They left them on that backdoor, they left them in our driveway,” Sherman said. “They leave them at the bottom of the aisle.”

A sign outside warns people that it is illegal to throw pets there, but the shelter said 10 new kittens were thrown there just last week.

“We’ve had over 90 cats and kittens thrown at us this year,” Sherman said.

She said she thought people left the animals at the AFC because it was a safe haven without killing. But since they’re at full capacity, Sherman said they’ll have to start handing them over to city shelters – and some of them are being euthanized.

“Please don’t keep throwing these animals, these beautiful animals at us,” Sherman pleaded. “We just can’t afford to take care of him anymore. I mean, we don’t have the resources.

Besides space, Sherman said it takes time and money – which they don’t have – to take care of them. Donations are down 50 to 70%.

“We need the money to help take care of all the cats and kittens that have been thrown at us this year,” Sherman said. “We lack funds, we don’t have any. We have no source of income without donations.
