Animal rescue in Cincinnati to help out-of-state puppy mill case

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Cincinnati animal rescuers are preparing to help with an out-of-state puppy mill case they say will involve hundreds of animals in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

In the next weeks, HART Cincinnati will send rescuers to another state to help with the case after the “Rescue Guardians” request their help.

HART admissions coordinator Katie Goodpaster said this will be the first time they have had boots in the field during a puppy mill investigation.

“There are over 200 dogs on the property. They are mainly small breed dogs, your Maltese, Bichons, Yorkies, Mini Aussies, ”she said.

They expect it to be physically and emotionally difficult.

“It’s bad enough to see a dog when he comes out of a transport that comes from one of these situations, but come down and see him in the dirt and grime, feces, urine, stacked cages and all the pitiful eyes that I’m sure we’ll be watching ourselves, we do our best to arm ourselves against that and come in and do what needs to be done. It sure won’t be easy, ”said Goodpaster.

Goodpaster said they can’t share many details about the case as it is still under investigation, but she says rescuers have an idea of ​​what to expect based on the experiences past.

“The owners of puppy mills, their main goal is to make money. They don’t care about the dog’s feelings, the conditions, the dogs don’t see a vet, ”she said.

Before their trip, HART volunteers seek help from the community. Goodpaster said they started a Amazon Wish List which includes items that they are likely to need at the scene.

She said they were also in desperate need of foster families.

“Without foster families, this limits the number of dogs we can bring back, which in turn can overwhelm another rescue,” Goodpaster said.

At least one other Kentucky-based organization will help with the puppy mill case.
