STATEN ISLAND, NY – Here’s a story that will make you smile.
Christian, a Staten Islander, soldier from New York State and founder of SIFT (Staten Island Friends Together), helps people facing disasters. The group helps families dig through the rubble to find precious memories and try to get back on their feet.
When Hurricane Ida devastated parts of the East Coast and Louisiana, Christian and two other volunteers flew in to help. During his mission, he came across a dilapidated house crushed by a fallen tree. His team went to investigate and found several dogs trying to get out of the sun. Most were malnourished and had to resolve to eat whatever they could find – stones, dirt and trash – to survive.
Christian and his team went out of their way to help the animals, which suffered from fleas, ticks, heartworms, roundworms, broken teeth and more.
âIt hurt me a lot to see what condition they were in,â Christian said.
Then he found Bear. Bear had been abandoned even before the storm struck.
After a long search to find dog owners via Facebook, flyers, and word of mouth, Christian decided he couldn’t leave Bear behind.
Thank you to the volunteers who dedicate themselves to helping these animals to be adopted by loving families like you. It takes a lot of time and dedication to volunteer in the animal rescues listed below.
Before adopting a new furry friend, volunteers organize weekly pet events in and around the borough, send out announcements, organize fundraisers, help with supplies, clean cages, feed them. animals, making sure an animal’s medical needs are taken care of and more. All of this is done without pay, out of love and behind the scenes.
If you are looking to adopt, remember that there are elderly and disabled pets out there who also need your care and attention.
If you are unable to adopt, please consider volunteering, donating or hosting, or sharing this page with someone who can.
Let me introduce you to Spike …
