Two baby calves have died from infection with the herpes virus in the past two days at an animal rescue center in Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh, a forestry official said on Saturday.

While a calf named Lakshman died on Thursday, another named Reva succumbed to the infection on Friday at the Elephant Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary, said Prabhakar Khalko, deputy director of the Elephant Project (Surguja).

These two calves, aged one year and nine months, were the offspring of Kumki elephants who were brought in from Karnataka to fight the human-elephant conflict, she said.

Kumki’s elephants are trained to capture and tame wild elephants, she said.

Lakshman showed symptoms of the viral infection on Wednesday, after which medical treatment was started. But despite the vets’ best efforts, the jumbo could not be saved and he died on Thursday, ” Khalko said.

The next day, another calf that had been kept separate after showing similar symptoms died, she added.

Their autopsy confirmed that they were suffering from a Herpesvirus infection (EEHV). However, their viscera samples were sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh for further examination, the official said.

The herpes virus usually affects elephants under the age of 10 with poor immunity. Usually, these animals die within 24 to 48 hours of the onset of symptoms of this virus, she said, adding that her vaccine is not available in the country.

After the deaths, the elephants remaining at the rescue center were moved to other locations in the premises where disinfectants were sprayed, Khalko said.
