Tips to make your pet comfortable if he’s afraid of fireworks

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – With July 4 fast approaching, many shelters are bracing for an influx of lost dogs. However, they do have a few suggestions on how to prevent your dog from running away. If you have a dog that’s afraid of fireworks, don’t let it set off in your house. Shelters recommend going to a show to watch fireworks rather than setting them off in your home. This way your dog won’t be as scared since he’s not in his yard. Additionally, if your dog is suffering from severe anxiety, you may want to ask your vet for medication to help him get through July 4th. Most importantly, make sure your dog is in a safe and secure location.

“Keep the TV or radio on something loud enough that will cover it,” said Sandy Fogarasi, founder and CEO of Loving Heart Animal Shelter. “Make sure they’re in a secure area of your house as well. I have seen stories where they escape from the house. “

If your dog escapes and is recovered by animal control, to recover your pet it is important to have photos and veterinary records to prove that you are the owner. Especially a rabies vaccination which is something you will need to get your pet back. This is why shelters recommend having your pet chipped. Also, if you are next door to someone who has an anxious dog, be respectful.

“Just watch out for your neighbors if they have pets,” Fogarasi said. “If you are going to shoot fireworks, do it in a safe manner. If you are the pet owner, take precautions to make sure your dog is safe.”
