Over the past 18 months, many of us have welcomed a new four-legged friend to our homes as the Kennel Club has seen the number of dog owners increase by almost 8% from 2020.
But with 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, there is a lot of thought to be done before selecting your perfect puppy – whether you want a large dog, a family dog, or a crossbreed.
While each person has different needs, for owners of slightly older dogs, it may be worth looking for a dog with a particular range of attributes.
Breeds that require less grooming and exercise are easier to care for by people with mobility challenges, while dogs with the good, easy-going temperament make loyal and loving companions for people living alone.
Here are 10 of the breeds that tick all of those boxes, according to the American Kennel Club.

Poodles – standard, miniature, or toy – have all of the attributes needed to make a great companion dog. They are extremely intelligent and affectionate, easy to train, only need to be walked once a day, and only need grooming once a month.
