TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – An urgent appeal to dog lovers, your help is needed.

Tallahassee shelter is in critical condition overflowing with dogs

Staff and volunteers scramble to try to adopt animals and avoid running out of space.

Otherwise, they might be forced to take drastic action.

Animal Shelter Foundation Vice President Kate MacFall said the animal shelter was overcrowded and it was time to help.

The Animal Services Center has 110 kennels.

But right now it houses more than 115 dogs, forcing some of the puppies to double up in kennels.

They call on dog lovers to come and adopt.

“When you adopt an animal, you immediately open a kennel for that other dog waiting, so when those next animals come in the front door, the staff doesn’t have to make those really tough decisions that they don’t want to. take in. The need is quite significant,” Vice President Kate MacFall said.

If adoption isn’t for you, you can also foster an animal to help ease the clutter.

“It’s not like oh, it’s for someone else. No no. We mean you. It is, it is the request. For people seeing this, we need you. Please help. Please come and help these animals,” MacFall said.

If the number of dogs in the shelter continues to increase, the animal shelter will be forced to begin euthanasia.

To help fight the need, the shelter is hosting its 20th annual Tails and Trails race this Saturday starting at 7 a.m. at the Animal Services Center, promoting pets for adoption.

The community event is a 1 mile, 5k, 10k and half marathon run where all proceeds raised go towards heartworm treatments, surgeries and different training opportunities.

The complete list of animals to adopt is available here.
