Sustainable CT working with Branford Animal Shelter on a net zero facility

Sustainable CT, through its Community Match Fund program, supports the shelter’s goal of becoming the country’s first net zero animal shelter, the organization said. The shelter is raising funds to build a permanent facility that will integrate solar, thermal and high performance building standards to achieve net zero energy use.

Working with Branford’s Engineering Department, the Office of Sustainability and local green building experts, the refuge has designed a building that will use natural resources in a sustainable manner to reduce human – and animal – impact on the land. environment, according to the press release.

“We have worked diligently over the past 18 months, during the pandemic, to raise funds for our new building,” said shelter manager Laura Burban in a prepared statement, “and we are delighted to make the energy efficiency a defining element of our unique ‘animal building’.

Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter has been helping homeless animals along the Connecticut coast and surrounding areas since April 2003. Hundreds of displaced animals pass through the doors of the refuge each year. In addition to dogs and cats, the Branford Animal Shelter also serves as a temporary home for less common animals, including guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, and sometimes even owls and deer.
