‘Stray’ dogs and cats flood animal shelter after fireworks – NBC 7 San Diego

The San Diego Humane Society tweeted Monday that at 2 p.m. it had taken in 92 “stray animals” since the morning of July 4.

Officials at the animal shelter suspect that many of the creatures fled during the July 4 fireworks display on Sunday night, which took place across the county.

Remarkably, only 75 of those animals were dogs, said Nina Thompson, director of public relations for the Humane Society, who added that the other pets were 13 cats and four other animals, including a rabbit, a reptile and a bird.

Fortunately for pets and their missing owners, the San Diego Humane Society does not euthanize healthy or treatable pets. it usually starts after five days if it is a healthy animal that has not been microchipped or not wearing a collar with a phone number.

Last year, of course, there were no fireworks displays, and despite the relative peace and quiet of the holidays celebrated during the pandemic, 169 animals were taken into stray between July 4 and July 6. A better comparison can be made with 2019, when, between July 4 and the following two days, 300 stray animals – including 165 dogs, 130 cats and five other animals – were taken in by the humanitarian company. Unfortunately, only 40% of these dogs ended up being claimed by their owners.

The San Diego Humane Society has some tips for anyone whose pets ran away during July 4th.

Anyone who finds a stray animal or has run away from their pet is urged to contact the San Diego Humane Society for more information. In the meantime, here are some tips from the company:

  1. Keep the animal at home and try to locate the owner through the Nextdoor app or other social media platforms. “Most of the animals are found close to where they live. This is a great way to quickly help the animal return to its family,” the humanitarian company said. Visit the company page lost and found for advice on finding an owner
  2. If you are unable to locate the owner, keep the pet overnight and take it to the humanitarian company.
  3. If you cannot keep the animal, call local law enforcement ‘s non-emergency lines that can put you in contact with Humane Society humanitarian workers
  4. Call Wildlife Project for animals that you think are wild

Like every year, NBC 7 will be partnering up with the San Diego Humane Society later this summer for the month-long annual Clear the Shelters event from August 23 through September. 19. During Clear the Shelters, thousands of people across San Diego adopt pets.
