Stoke City face goalkeeping emergency ahead of Huddersfield Town visit

Stoke City are scrambling to find a senior goalkeeper in time to face Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon following news that Angus Gunn has been ruled out for six weeks with an ankle ligament injury.

The goalkeeper was loaned out by Premier League side Southampton as former first-choice Jack Butland headed to Crystal Palace on a permanent transfer.

Former Barnsley stopper Adam Davies started the season between the sticks for the Potters but is also currently sidelined with a knee ligament injury.

The Stoke Sentinel writes: “Cameroonian youth international Blondy Nna Noukeu is on standby while Michael O’Neill has the option of recalling Joe Bursik from a long-term loan at Doncaster Rovers.”

The sun claim that the latter option is exactly what Stoke intends to do.

But the Sentinel continue: “England youth keeper Nathan Broome had been third choice for the past few weeks while there is also the possibility of an emergency loan or free agent move.”

If Stoke were to sign a free agent, he would need to be registered by noon on Friday to be eligible to face the Terriers, but for an emergency loan Stoke would have until noon on Saturday.

Clubs are not normally allowed to recall players from loans outside the transfer window, but goalkeepers are an exception under EFL Rules and Regulations.

Clause 55.1.5(b) allows teams to recall players from a loan to another EFL club in specific circumstances which Stoke meets.

He says: “A standard goalkeeper loan (but not otherwise) may be subject to a recall clause exercisable at any time.

“Any recall can only be implemented… if the club wishing to exercise the recall only has one professional goalkeeper.

“…Recall will be subject to at least 24 hours’ written notice. A goalkeeper will not be permitted to resume a standard loan after a recall has been exercised.”
