Staunton City Council proposes to take over animal sanctuary as fiscal agent

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) – The Staunton City Council wants to take over as fiscal agent for the Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center.

At last week’s town council meeting, councilors discussed the future of the shelter and they agreed they wanted to be more financially involved. Councilman Carolyn Dull said she has heard from many advocates since Waynesboro issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the shelter.

“We’ve had many emails and people speaking in on questions from the public about their concerns about the animal shelter and the understaffing and other issues,” Dull said.

When the subject was brought up, the board unanimously agreed.

“Staunton City Council has been unanimous in wanting to support the shelter by volunteering to be the financial agent and also considering providing additional funding, so that staff salaries are at a higher level and that all their needs are met,” she mentioned.

Mayor Andrea Oakes said it’s very important to make sure the shelter has what they need. However, she said Staunton has not met with Waynesboro and Augusta County about it.

Waynesboro has put out a tender on the shelter to help with the day-to-day management of the shelter. Local defenders have expressed concern over who could take over, saying it is very important the shelter keeps a very low death rate.
