South Georgia Technical College Now Offers Associate’s Degree in Fire and Emergency Services – Cordele Dispatch

South Georgia Technical College offers an Associate’s Degree Program for Fire and Emergency Services for students interested in entry-level employment in the public safety fields of fire science and medical services. emergency from the spring semester, January 13.^e, 2021. Students who enroll in this program may be eligible for the Hope Fellowship, Hope Grant, and Federal Pell Grant. Prior learning credit may be given to students who have already completed basic firefighter and paramedic courses.

“This is a great opportunity for those interested in working with a fire department or in the field of emergency medical services,” said South Georgia Technical College President Dr John Watford. “These two areas are interdependent and our students now have the opportunity to apply for jobs in one or both career areas. Job growth in these two fields is expected to increase by six percent or more over the next few years. “

“Students graduating from this program may be eligible for certification and / or licensure in the following areas: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, EMT, and AEMT. Students can attend part time or full time, ”said EMT instructor Brad Harnum.

“By offering an associate’s degree in this combined field, we allow students to broaden their employment opportunities,” said South Georgia Technical College academic dean Julie Partain, who oversees the two areas of the program. “This combined program degree level offering also allows students to complete both programs in six semesters and may qualify them for additional financial aid opportunities.”

The Fire and Emergency Services Profession Diploma Program is conducted in cooperation with the Georgia Fire Academy and Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training to ensure that graduates have the skills, knowledge and qualifications necessary to serve firefighters in paid and volunteer fire departments. Graduates will be tested and certified at the level of national professional qualifications. After successfully completing the Firefighter / EMSP Diploma Program, students may be able to take the AEMT certification exam from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

In addition to offering associate degrees for the Fire and Emergency Services Profession Program, South Georgia Technical College will offer Technical Certificate of Credit programs in Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Technician, and advanced emergency medical technician. Each of these four CBT programs can be completed in a single semester.

Academic Dean Julie Partain also thanked the area fire departments and SGTC Seven County Service Area EMT Services for their support of this program. “This program is possible because we have so many active and committed firefighters and paramedics who help the program by teaching part-time,” Partain explained.

South Georgia Technical College Spring Semester begins January 13^e, 2021. Students can apply now online or when registering on January 11^e, 2021.
