Next week, animal shelters across the country are looking to clear their critter inventories at a time when many will be looking for new pets to take home. It’s a win-win for everyone.
The Solano County Animal Shelter will be one of more than 180 shelters in 38 states participating in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s quarterly “Empty Shelters” event, where all animals are available for a fee. adoption reduced or eliminated. This will be the third year that the Solano County Animal Shelter, a department of the Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division, will participate. “We are seeing a large influx of animals into the shelter, we believe people are going back to work, getting more animals that need homes forever,” she said.
Hoover predicts that up to 40 cats and kittens will be available for adoption next week, with the shelter currently housing around 20 felines.

Additionally, Hoover said there would be around 20 dogs and two rabbits available for adoption. Fees for all adoptions will be sponsored by Bissell Pet Foundation, so all pets will be free to adopt. However, Hoover said a license will be required for dogs adopted by residents of Solano. She also said carriers will be needed for those who wish to adopt cats or kittens.
Hoover said the event will be an opportunity to “give a pet a home forever,” which is in line with the goal of the Bissell Pet Foundation.

Empty Shelters will take place at the Solano County Animal Shelter from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. October 6-9 at 2510 Clay Bank Road, Fairfield. The refuge is closed from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. every day for a lunch break. Masks will be required to enter the shelter and animals will be available on a first come, first served basis. There will be no outlet for the animals.
