Staff reports
Hays County Courthouse, TX – It’s kitten season, which means it’s the time of year when the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter (SMRAS) sees hundreds of orphaned kittens enter.
In their ongoing efforts to help find homes and foster families for pets entering the shelter, they periodically offer a monthly adoption special. Animals ready for adoption are only $ 21 until the end of May. SMRAS, although located in San Marcos, is partially funded by and serves all of Hays County.

Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra encourages the community to help. “Homeless animals are a community problem, your help provides community solutions. “
Sharri Boyett, Judge Becerra’s Animal Advocate, suggests the following ways to help:
Reception and adoptions: Open your home to foster care or adoption. The shelter can be loud and spooky, so opening up your home to accommodate a pet means they can relax and come out of their shell. Foster kittens are very necessary during this time. Visit https://www.sanmarcostx.gov/2885/Become-a-Foster to learn more about Kitten Season and how to become a foster family. Foster families help fulfill the refuge’s mission of caring for, protecting and finding quality homes for abandoned and neglected animals. Each foster animal allows another needy animal to enter the shelter off the street.

Adoption : All adoptions are first done by in-person adoption. Visit https://www.sanmarcostx.gov/3259/Adoptable-Animals and select the animal (s) you want to meet and complete the adoption application. If the location or bio of the animal you are interested in says ‘host’ it is not at the shelter, so please send an email to the following address at http: // foster @ sanmarcostx.gov for more information and to meet the animal. Then come to the shelter during opening hours, call 512-805-2657 or email [email protected] to discuss your interest. All adoptions include sterilization, vaccinations and medication, microchip, veterinary exam, and 30 days of free pet health insurance.
You can visit https://www.sanmarcostx.gov/3259/Adoptable-Animals to get more information about each animal!

Volunteers: If you are unable to adopt or foster a family, consider becoming a volunteer. Being part of the SMRAS volunteering program is such a rewarding experience! Duties include animal cleaning and feeding, animal grooming and exercise, office work, adoption counseling / interactions, special projects and awareness events.
