Premier League loan rules explained after Pablo Mari joined Dani Ceballos at Arsenal

[ad_1]

Time is running out for Arsenal and other Premier League clubs as they prepare to wrap up their January transfer window.

Spain defender Pablo Mari joined the Gunners this afternoon on a first loan deal from Flamengo.

Arsenal have paid £ 4million for his services by the end of the season – but they have an option of £ 8million to make it a permanent move.

Now, with less than 72 hours until the window closes, will Mari be joined by more late arrivals as Mikel Arteta continues to build her squad?

Here’s how the deadline works when it comes to Premier League loan signings.

When does the loan window close?

Clubs in England can continue doing business until 11 p.m. on Friday evening. In this sense, there is no change from the “regular” transfer window.

For these loan agreements to be concluded, an agreement sheet must be submitted between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. As long as the deals are made before 11 p.m., clubs will have until midnight to complete the necessary documents in order to register their new player, hence the reason why some signings are announced beyond the deadline, and in some cases the next day.

What about emergency loans?

While this system has come to the rescue of clubs in the past, it was abandoned by FIFA before the 2016/2017 season and ceases to exist.

As a result, there will be no more loan movement when the January deadline has passed.

Are there any exceptions?

There is an exception where teams can sign an emergency goalkeeper for a seven-day loan – but only in extraordinary circumstances.

Under EFL rules, a team can sign a goalkeeper on an emergency loan provided that all professional goalkeepers currently on their squad are not available. It is on the basis that they are injured, suspended or in international service.

How many players can clubs borrow?

In the Premier League, clubs are limited to four loan signings each season – but they are only allowed to have two loan players registered from other Premier League clubs at any one time.

In the meantime, they are not allowed to send more than one goalkeeper to other clubs in the same division.

In Arsenal’s case, with Mari on the verge of registration, Arteta has the option of signing more loans as the clock ticks around 11pm on Friday night, because in terms of loans from non-Premier League clubs , the rules say: “With the exception of Welsh clubs participating in the competitions listed in rule V.6.2, loans from a club which is a member of another national association are not counted towards the above quotas. “

A Premier League spokeswoman said football.london that clubs can loan up to four players from non-Premier League clubs in the same national association, from the championship for example, and recalled that “international loans do not count towards the quota either”.
