Potter League helps save animals on one of the world’s largest emergency shelter animal transports

MIDDLETOWN, RI (WPRI) – More than 300 pets have been transported from El Paso in search of their new home forever, and for some that could mean Rhode Island.

When El Paso Animal Services asked for help cleaning their shelter by sending an SOS (Support Our Shelter) in June, the Bissell Pet Foundation stepped in to help and bring the animals up north. The center currently houses more than 700 animals.

The Middletown Potter League for Animals accepted five dogs and four kittens late Friday night.

Kara Montalbano, one of the Potter League workers who helped with the transport, said the effort could be one of the biggest emergency transports in the country.

“So we got them off the plane in New Jersey and drove them here last night, and they were all calm and just exhausted from a long day,” Montalbano said. “We kind of joked that it was July 4th, it was their journey to freedom and independence and a new home.”

The animals will be in “transport isolation” for a few days to be examined and to make sure they are in good health, but Montalbano says anyone interested in adopting can submit an application online and possibly come for an in-person visit. .
