Murders of Maggie Murdaugh and her son Paul bring ‘troubled’ marriage to Alex under the lens

ISLANDTON, SOUTH CAROLINA: On June 7, Margaret ‘Maggie’ Murdaugh, 52, and her son Paul Murdaugh, 22, were found shot dead in their family estate. According to current reports, Maggie and her husband Richard Alexander ‘Alex’ Murdaugh, a prominent South Carolina lawyer, may have been having marital problems at the time of the double murder.

According to Associated press, Colleton County MPs found the mother-son duo shot dead on the property near Islandton around 10 p.m. on June 7. They were shot several times and their bodies were found near a kennel, Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said.

Paul Murdaugh was awaiting trial on a separate charge of under the influence boating, which was behind the February 2019 crash that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach. His body was found seven days after the accident. The Murdaugh family has strong ties to the 14th Circuit District Attorney’s Office, which serves Allendale, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties.

Almost a month after the deaths, police still have not named any suspects in the double homicide. Maggie’s husband Alex was said to have been the one who allegedly found the bodies of his wife and son and called 911 from the scene. Alex was named Person of Interest. But he reportedly visited his sick father in hospital the night of the murders three days before his father died of natural causes. According to a News report, several law enforcement and prosecution sources with direct knowledge of the investigation said Alex remains at the center of the investigation to this day. Lawyers close to the family also said Alex was “fully cooperating” with the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division and was not a suspect.

The report also said that several sources close to the family described Alex and Maggie’s marriage as “troubled.” The report also noted that there is “a lot of gossip and speculation – both locally and among the state’s legal community – but nothing concrete to confirm.” A source close to the investigation told the news agency about their alleged marital problems: “This is one of the areas that is being looked at. This may not be the most promising lead, but it is being followed as part of the investigation. Lowcountry criminal defense attorney Susan Williams said WIS News that in her 17 years of practicing law, she had not seen a case that garnered as much attention across the country as this one. “Someone from law enforcement said the public shouldn’t be afraid. And no one has been arrested to date, so it doesn’t make sense to me, ”said Williams. “I’m sure there is an explanation for this – it’s plausible, but as a member of the general public I don’t understand it. We have two murders in Colleton County and we have no arrests.
