Clarksville, Tennessee (WTVF) – Fireworks make up the majority of Independence Day celebrations, but many pets are missing. Currently, the number of stray dogs and cats is increasing in animal shelters in some areas.

“This year has been inundated with barking dogs throughout the weekend,” said Dave Kaske, director of animal management in Montgomery County. “It was a busy weekend.

The Montgomery County Park Ranger picked up 22 dogs and 5 cats in three days. Currently, all the animals are housed in shelters, waiting for their owners to come and pick them up.

The small shelter had already reached its maximum capacity before the new residents arrived, forcing employees to use all available space. Some dogs were temporarily housed in a toilet kennel.

“It really put a lot of stress on the staff as well as the shelter,” Kaske said.

Some stray animals were equipped with microchips, others were not. According to Kasuke, microchips play a major role in speeding up the process, allowing lost animals to return home.

“The dog entering the facility must have a microchip before returning home,” Kasuke said. “If you didn’t have a microchip, you will have one before you go home. “

Kaske also recommended that pet owners make sure dogs and cats wear collars and ID tags with the latest phone numbers.

He said social media pages play a major role in reuniting lost pets with their parents. In Montgomery County, photos of the stray dog animal care and management are posted on the shelter’s Facebook page. Kaske also recommended anyone in the area where the animal went missing to contact the shelter.

Animals without identification will be housed for 3 days before being adopted. Animals that have some form of identification will be reared for 5 days. Montgomery County Animal Care and Control is located on North Spring Street in Clarksville, accessible at (931) 648-5750.
