Midland Humane Coalition acquires new rescue facility

The Midland Humane Coalition (MHC) has announced the acquisition of its new facility, The Joe and Van Mabee Animal Rescue Center (Mabee ARC).

The new Mabee ARC will be operated by Midland Humane Coalition as an ancillary facility to its PetSmart Enhanced Adoption Center. It will provide the essential space to prepare rescues for adoption.

The expansion occurred due to a need for sufficient space to quarantine, promote, rehabilitate and allow rescues to recover from stress, surgery or illness before placing them for adoption at the Center adoption improvement. The 5,700-square-foot, 2-acre facility will be able to house up to 60 dogs and 20 cats temporarily while they undergo the screening process.

The Mabee ARC has been an ongoing project since the launch of a fundraising campaign in 2016, which has generated generous donations from Joe and Van Mabee, Javaid and Vicki Anwar, several foundations, private donors and a grant from Midland County. . As the primary donor and member of the MHC Board of Trustees, the facility is named in honor of Joe and Van Mabee.

MHC was initially to construct a larger-scale building located on undeveloped land in northeast Midland. However, with the opening of the new Town of Midland Animal Shelter and after considering the infrastructure and construction costs as well as the time required to build a brand new facility, council determined that a more viable option consisted of purchasing a turnkey facility – the former Wag N Tail Pet Resort.

This facility is almost ready to move in and will allow MHC to start operations in minimum time while providing room for construction and expansion in the future.

With minor renovations underway, MHC can use the facility to support several rescues and projects. The official opening of the Joe and Van Mabee Animal Rescue Center will take place on November 11. This date also marks the opening of MHC’s 10th anniversary of its first facility, the PetSmart Enhanced Adoption Center.

The Midland Humane Coalition is also hosting a fundraising masked ball on October 30 at the Petroleum Club. The 10th Annual Fur Ball will be an unforgettable evening with wine, dinner and music from West Texas Funk. Tickets cost $ 150.
