Lowcountry Animal Shelters Participate in Statewide “Adoption Extravaganza”

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Lowcountry animal shelters are joining a statewide “adoption extravaganza” this weekend as part of an effort to clean up shelters.

Local shelters have been in a state of emergency for the past month and are working to get more animals adopted as they reach maximum capacity.

Charleston Animal Society

The Charleston Animal Society is hosting a “Clear the Shelter” celebration on Saturday.

They say from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. you can adopt any animal for free thanks to the generosity of Hank and Laurel Greer.

The event will also feature food and fun, with local businesses stepping in to make the event festive, organizers say.

The shelter says each adoption will include a Hills Science Diet giveaway bag with coupons and supplies, as well as a Science Diet food bag.

They say all adopted animals have been vet examined, spayed or neutered, microchipped, tested for heartworms or feline leukemia, and updated on basic vaccinations.

“The timing for the ‘Clear the Shelter’ event couldn’t be more perfect,” said Joe Elmore, President and CEO of the Charleston Animal Society. “This event will help tremendously.

Berkeley Animal Center

The Berkeley Animal Center is also working to clean the shelters.

They say they have seen a record number of dogs and cats this year.

The refuge is hosting an “Adopt and Buy” celebration Saturday at the Firefly Distillery in North Charleston.

According to the organizers, it will feature local vendors, food trucks, adoptable dogs and many Firefly Spirits.

The event is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m.

The Firefly Distillery also plans to have live music on the front porch from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Berkeley Animal Center‘s adoption hours are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays.

They are located at 131 Central Berkeley Drive in Moncks Corner.

Dorchester paws

Dorchester Paws joins adoption events with their Rock the Rescue event.

On Saturday and Sunday, the shelter says bars and restaurants in the Lowcountry are teaming up with local groups to listen to live music to raise money for homeless pets.

They say more than 15 bars and restaurants around the tri-county area are participating, as well as more than 100 local groups.

You can find the whole range here.

Organizers say tickets are $ 10 at each site.

They say the annual event raised over $ 24,000 for the cause in 2019.

Dorchester Paws is located at 136 4 Paws Lane in Summerville.
