“It means to me helping these animals” – How a local animal shelter deals with overcrowding problem | News

HILLSDALE, Indiana (WTHI) – The Parke-Vermillion County Humane Society is just one of many local animal shelters struggling with overcrowding. Last week alone, the shelter received 40 new animals. Now they are looking for homes for over 120 dogs and cats during the peak holiday season.

Adopting pets during the holidays

“We are going through a difficult time,” said Tamara Perkinson, executive director of the Parke-Vermillion County Humane Society. “The sheer number of extra animals makes management even more difficult. “

Perkinson says the holidays are a busy time for the refuge, but even more potentially after the holidays when many of those furry friends are back.

“Everyone wants this cute little puppy that goes under the Christmas tree, and they don’t realize puppies are chewing, and puppies are puppies,” she said. “You have to train them at home. It’s not just a commitment for the Christmas holidays, it’s a commitment for 15 years.”

She says they see 25% more animals returning right after the holidays than at any other time of year. They say it’s because some people don’t realize how much of a financial and emotional commitment to owning a dog or cat is.

But in the end, she’s hoping more people can step up and commit to helping, so animals like Nica and her friends can be adopted as well.

“It means the world to me to help these animals,” said Perkinson. “I feel like it’s the lost souls of the world who need someone to speak up for them.”

If you’re looking to help these animals, here’s what you can do! The humanitarian society is always looking for volunteers and donations before the new year. You can call them at (765) -492-3540.
