Indiana animal shelter participates in Empty the Shelters event

OCHS has partnered with the Bissell Pet Foundation to reduce adoption fees. On Sunday morning, the shelter sent 15 pets to new homes.

PAOLI, Ind. – The Bissell Pet Foundation tries to empty shelters all over the country. Participating shelters offer reduced adoption fees to find permanent homes for animals in their care.

One of these shelters is the Orange County Humanitarian Society in Paoli, Indiana.

Sunday morning, 15 animals were adopted as part of the event. While some shelters have waived adoption fees altogether, OCHS has reduced fees instead of eliminating them, so adopters still feel responsible for their new pets.

Twelve years ago, OCHS went from a killing shelter to a non-killing shelter.

“We want animals to have a chance, a second or a third chance,” said director Deanna Kendall.

Now they are making sure their pets are heading to good homes and asking adopters to fill out an application.

Kendall said the adoption event encourages people to come and meet the animals available, and sometimes it’s the pets that choose their owners.

“They change their mind when they arrive here. They might see something on our website and when they get here they’ll say ‘oh no I like this one better’ or it’ll come to their door and show them affection, ”Kendall said.

Louisville Metro Animal Services and the Breckinridge County Animal Shelter also hosted this event this week.
