Dog ownership climbed nearly 8% in 2020 according to the Kennel Club, as the lockdown meant people felt more able to open their homes to a new puppy.
But with 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, there is a lot of thought to be done before selecting your perfect pooch – whether you want a large dog, a family dog, or a crossbreed.
The Kennel Club separates breeds into seven different groups, each with a particular set of attributes.
If you are looking for a determined, courageous and independent dog, then it is worth considering a breed from the Terrier group.
They are the 10 most popular terrier dogs in the UK, according to Kennel Club records in 2020.
There is no doubt that the UK’s best dog for terriers. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier recorded 5,010 healthy registrations last year.

Named after the border between Scotland and England where it hails from, the courageous Border Terrier has 4,587 Kennel Club registrations, placing it in second place.

1,502 Kennel Club registrations in 2020 are enough to make the Bull Terrier the third most popular dog in their group.

The West Highland White Terrier had 1,460 registrations in 2020, placing them in fourth place. Commonly known as Westies, they need a lot of exercise to thrive.
