Franklin County Humane Society aims to raise $ 10,000 for new shelter

FRANKLIN CO., Ky. (WKYT) – The dogs and cats of the Franklin County Humane Society have a future that depends on us.

The organization’s campaign hopes to bring the animals to a brand new shelter by July 2022.

“We raised $ 1.1 million in one year during a pandemic,” said board chairman Sam Marcus.

Marcus says there is still $ 500,000 to spend. If the organization raises $ 10,000 in the week of July 19, an anonymous donor will match that number.

“We could have $ 20,000 more or more for the fundraising campaign,” says Marcus.

Why a new building? Marcus says the space was built like a kennel, but the organization is welcoming more cats.

That’s not all.

“In fact, we are now over 50 years old,” says Marcus. “We were flooded 6 times.

Marcus shares that the last flood only happened this week.

The new facility, which will be located at Carpenter Farm, will not just be out of the floodplain. It will have more space allowing the separation between cats and dogs. This prevents any disease from spreading. This is the space that will also give a buffer if there is an influx of admission.

“Which always happens with kittens in particular,” says Marcus.

One donation at a time, making a difference for every new furry resident.

Marcus says the shelter has received more animals in the past two months as people are more on the move.
