Paws N Hooves is a host family animal rescue, which means that instead of having a central facility, manager Tania Kovar runs a network of hospitality volunteers who house and care for dogs and livestock until they can be adopted. Paws N Hooves originated from the Black Forest Animal Sanctuary, which was previously Southern Colorado Animal Rescue.
âIn 2019, we changed the name to Paws N Hooves to get us out of this Black Forest pinhole,â says Kovar. “Tracy [Berry, director of Black Forest Animal Sanctuary] had the opportunity to move to Florida in 2019, so the sanctuary was sold, but we have been in foster care since 2019. â
Paws N Hooves serves 300 to 500 animals per year through its changing network of foster families. âOur foster families come and go very quickly because such a large percentage adopt their foster dogs,â says Kovar. âAt one point, we usually have 40 to 50 host families. Ninety percent of those adopt their dogs, and we keep about 10 percent of our foster families, and it’s an ongoing process, to gain new foster families.
Thanks to the Give! Campaign, Kovar hopes Paws N Hooves can raise enough money to once again have a physical sanctuary for his animals. âRight now, our biggest challenge is raising money to buy land to rebuild a shrine that will belong to relief,â she said. âEvery dollar from Give! goes towards our vision this year towards a new sanctuary.
A physical location for Paws N Hooves will allow Kovar to consolidate the comprehensive medical and behavioral care of rescue animals in one location. âWe have a trainer who volunteers and does paid training for us with our host families,â she says. âShe also helps our adopters after adoption. She also helps us make our dogs adoptable. We take many medical cases including heartworms, heart murmurs. We took a dog that was in a severe dog fighting situation which looks amazing now. We took a dog that had complete neurological problems and found a donor who donated $ 13,000 to save that dog’s life. We treat tons of medical issues and a lot of behavioral issues [issues]. It is the typical dog that we welcome.
Kovar is currently working to bring Hannah, an older dog from Texas with serious medical issues, to Paws N Hooves. âShe is currently in the Houston, Texas area,â she said. âThis little lady was in a shelter and gave birth to three puppies. A rescue partner in Houston asked if we could take this mom and the three puppies and I said “Sure.” They took them out, placed them in foster care, and all three puppies died.
One by one, they all died and poor Hannah stayed. She is an 8-year-old bitch. She had mastitis, she has crushed teeth. The Houston vet told the rescue to wean the puppies and euthanize mom, as she also has a heart murmur. We’re working to get her here now; we have a host family for her. She should be here on [Nov.] 18. We’re going to get her into Petcardia, we’re going to treat her teeth, take care of her as long as possible.
