FARMINGTON – A low cost animal adoption event hosted by the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter over the past two weeks has been a huge success, with 160 animals finding new homes in time for the holidays.

The event ran from December 6-18 and was sponsored by the BISSELL Pet Foundation at over 230 shelters across the United States and Canada. Animals at Farmington Shelter were available for adoption for only $ 20.

Stacie Voss, the shelter’s animal welfare director, said 77 cats, 79 dogs, three guinea pigs and a rabbit were adopted by local residents at the event. Those numbers far exceeded the totals for another low-cost adoption event hosted by the shelter in May, when 55 dogs, 21 cats and a rabbit were adopted.

“It was awesome,” Voss said of the event. “We weren’t very busy, but we were constantly busy all the time, which is good for us. Of course, we still have animals that need a home.”

As of December 21, the shelter still had 11 cats and 33 dogs available for adoption, so the facility was far from empty, Voss said, adding that even more animals were being prepared for the program. adoption.

But the shelter had experienced overcrowded conditions and staffing issues before the event, she said, and the ability to reduce the animal population, even for a short time, will give its workers the chance to resume their work. breath and maybe do some cleaning.

The Farmington Shelter has worked with the BISSELL Foundation on low cost or free pet adoption events on several occasions, and Voss said she was very pleased with the results.

More than 160 animals at the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter recently found a new home at a low cost pet adoption event.

“They do a great job and that makes it easier for us,” she said. “… It was a great partnership. “

Most of the people who brought home a pet from the most recent event weren’t necessarily looking for a pet for the holidays, she said, but the timing didn’t hurt.

“I think some of these people were going to be home more for the holidays, so the timing worked out well for some people,” she said.

Voss said she expects the pet population at the shelter to rebound quickly, noting that there is a waiting list for people who wish to give up a pet. She said the facility still has several long-term dogs awaiting adoption.

“We are always looking for homes for really special animals,” she said.
