SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – On September 5, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, Dakin Humane Society sent three current members and a former staff member to New Orleans to help the Louisiana SPCA treat animals left behind by the second hurricane most devastating in the history of this state.

The Dakin team consisted of Moon Wymore, Esther Coler, Amanda Rock and former employee Ashley Loehn. Each employee brought their expertise in medical and behavioral skills in handling animals in shelters. Dakin was one of eight groups that worked together to help the SPCA during the crisis.

Moon Wymore said: “The majority were animal control officers,” she continued. “For most of us, the main thing was to help the SPCA staff. When we arrived, many of them were still living at the shelter because their homes were without power or run down. Some didn’t. took no days off. We loved being able to provide a little relief so that these people could go home and not worry about the animals. “

The hardest part for Wymore and Team Dakin was getting home. “For us, coming home was bittersweet. The Louisiana SPCA remains closed, but animals continue to arrive. As I said goodbye to all of our new friends, I saw the first dogs return to cages due to lack of space in the shelter. I was too sad to take a last look before leaving. This city and especially the surrounding areas have so much work to do. It was moving to leave them.

Dakin Executive Director Carmine DiCenso praised the team for their hard work, saying, “The courage and dedication to the animals presented by these four people is incredible,” he continued. “They braved harsh conditions, emotional challenges, intense heat and limited resources to literally help hundreds of needy animals at the Louisiana SPCA during their week there. It’s thanks to people like them that Dakin is able to help in a crisis We are all very proud of this team for their commitment to help and the sacrifices they have made to make a difference.

Dakin has a long history of disaster relief, having also sent a team to New Orleans in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina and to Puerto Rico in 2017 after Hurricane Maria.
