County Animal Shelter Supply Order Underway | New

CITY OF PLUS-HEAD – As residents enjoy the summer time with their pets, a group of county animal lovers want to make sure the animal shelter’s homeless animals are not forgotten.

Ruth Jones and Sea Paws, a local pet supply company in Morehead City, are collecting pet supplies for the Carteret County Humane Society Animal Shelter in Newport as part of Paws in July.

“Someone needs to help the animals at the shelter,” Ms Jones said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. “We are organizing a mass drive for the pets at the shelter until the end of July, a bit like a Christmas in July for the animals. We are hoping for lots of donations now that people are back. “

People are encouraged to drop off pet food, non-clumping cat litter, pet toys, and other items at Sea Paws, 412-C Evans St., Morehead City, during business hours. Items can be dropped off from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily except Tuesday and Sunday when the business is closed.

The group has set up a palm tree, as well as a collage of photos of animals from the shelter, where donors can leave their items. Ms Jones said the donations would be transported to the shelter in late July or August 1.

Carteret County Humane Society’s deputy animal shelter director Casandra Tupaj said food and supplies were needed and that she appreciated the group’s support.

“We really appreciate their efforts for the animals,” Ms. Tupaj said. “It helps us take care of the animals and the toys give them something to do. “

Ms Tupaj said items that are welcome include Purina Kitten Chow, Purina Cat Chow, Purina Dog Chow, Purina Puppy Chow, non-clumping cat litter, pet toys (no rawhide bones) and products. cleaning, especially bleach and laundry detergent.

Ms Jones started the procurement campaign several years ago in memory of a beloved dog she owned and who had been rescued. She and Sea Paws have collections twice a year, one in December called Santa Paws, and one in July.

The July Reader is held in memory of a greyhound, Earl, who belonged to Sea Paws store owners Jeff and Sarah Vaughn.

“Earl was a rescue and the first one we’ve ever owned,” Ms. Vaughn said Thursday.

Another reason Ms. Vaughn enjoys participating in the sourcing campaign is because she was on the board of directors of an animal shelter in Greensboro.

“It’s a different and difficult job when you work in an animal shelter,” she said. “Our humanitarian company does such a good job of matching an animal with a pet parent, so if there is anything we can do to help them with food and supplies, it makes a tough job easier. . “

Ms. Vaughn pointed out that donors of supplies are welcome to purchase them from anywhere.

“They don’t have to buy them here. We are just a drop-off point, ”she said. “We just want to help provide whatever they can use to keep the animals healthy and happy until they find a home.”
