President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency in response to the spread of the coronavirus in an address Friday from the Rose Garden.
Trump has also opened up access to up to $ 50 billion in funds for U.S. states and territories. Additionally, Trump waived interest on all student loans held by federal government agencies until further notice.
Emergency orders issued by Trump have given new authority to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. HHS Secretary Alex Azar will now be able to immediately “signal revisions to applicable laws and regulations.”
In addition, the declaration will allow all hospitals and healthcare providers maximum flexibility to respond to the virus and care for patients.
The statement :
- allow the possibility of derogating from the laws to allow telehealth
- allow remote doctor visits and hospital recordings
- grant the option to waive certain federal licensing requirements so that physicians from other states can provide service in states that need it most
- grant the option to waive requirements that hospitals limit the number of beds to 25 and stay 96 hours
- allow the possibility of extending hospital stays
- grant the option to waive the requirements of a three-day hospital stay prior to admission to a nursing home
- give the option to bring additional doctors on board or obtain the necessary office space
- grant the capacity to care for more patients within the hospital itself
Medicare and Medicaid have also lifted various regulations to ensure more widespread care.
