Cincinnati Animal Care brings a positive pet adoption experience to The Off Market

BLUE ASH, Ohio (WXIX) – The OFF Market, a flea market held on the second Saturday during the summer months at Summit Park in Blue Ash, not only had tents of food, drinks, art, craft or household items; but there was also a tent surrounded by dogs.

The Cincinnati Animal Care Humane Society was on hand for the duration of the event to not only spread the word about adoption and promotion through Cincinnati Animal Care, but also to let people see the dogs through a different lens as opposed to a typical animal shelter visit.

Ray Anderson, community engagement manager at Cincinnati Animal Care, said: “Seeing the dogs outside the shelter environment: you walk into the shelter – especially if you walk through the kennels, they’ll bark, they’ll jumping into the kennel, things like that.Here in a nice park…with their host families or a volunteer they know very well…they are much more relaxed and much more open to meeting new people .

“For too long people have had the Sarah McLachlan vibe of the animal shelter – they think everything there is sad and depressing. It’s not the shelter we run and it’s not the vibe we “We want to project. We’re not trying to make you feel guilty for having a dog; we want it to be a happy, positive experience because they’re happy dogs that are ready to go home and they just need to meet someone” , added Anderson.

On August 4, Cincinnati Animal Care announced that it had added a new pet adoption center in the Pleasant Ridge area. This is not a second shelter, but a place to meet foster dogs so people don’t have to make shelter appointments.

Throughout August, there will be soft openings at the Pet Adoption Center on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The center’s grand opening will be on Labor Day weekend, according to Anderson. This extra space is necessary for the shelter due to the excessive number of animals at the shelter.

“We are at over two hundred percent capacity at the shelter. We have more than two hundred dogs at the shelter: about thirty caged dogs at the shelter; that’s thirty too many to be in boxes. We have about one hundred and fifty dogs in foster homes,” Anderson said of the abundance of dogs available at the shelter.
