Charleston football coach reunites with dog after four years

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (WSAZ) – A man smiled from ear to ear after reuniting with his best friend four years later.

“I shed a few tears and was completely overwhelmed,” said Kwesi Wilkerson.

Wilkerson lost her puppy, Heidi, in 2017. She was playing in her yard at the time and ran away.

“I haven’t been able to find her since,” Wilkerson said.

For three years she had lived with someone else who had found her.

However, no longer able to take care of the puppy, they dropped him off at the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association in early September.

“It was meant to be,” Wilkerson said.

Having no idea her baby had been dropped off, Wilkerson, who is a Catholic soccer coach from Charleston, got his team to volunteer with the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association. As he was walking around the kennel, he found her.

“My heart has collapsed. I was in complete shock. I just wanted to make sure it was her. It was so unreal, ”Wilkerson said.

“She was jostling all around him. She wanted to be fair against him. You could tell she was like ‘my person is here,’ said Sarah Tolley, an employee of the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association.

The minute he saw her, he knew without a doubt that it was his pup.

He even took out some old photos to confirm it was her and said the white spots on her chest matched perfectly and the unique curly tail had sold her.

“She follows me around the house now. She hasn’t left me, ”Wilkerson said.

It is a bond that even lost time could not break.
