Cat That Saves Lives Wins Arkansas Animal Shelter Award

EL DORADO, Ar. (KTAL / KMSS) – When a woman from El Dorado shared the story of her life-saving kitten at the Petco Love contest, she also won a big check for her local shelter.

Rachael Osbon says her cat Torty “made cookies” on her neck when her heart rate increased dramatically. She turned out to be suffering from a heart condition called supraventricular tachycardia, and Torty’s kicking helped get her heart back on track. The movement in medical terms is a massage of the carotid sinus. It affects the vagus nerve, slowing the signals controlling your heart rate.

Each year, Petco Love Stories collects testimonials about how adopted pets have changed lives. They select the winners and award scholarships to the organizations from which they come.

Osbon shared her story in the Petco Love contest and won $ 1,000 for the Union County Animal Protection Society, where she adopted Torty.

“I saw the Facebook ad for Petco Love and thought, ‘What a great way to give back.’ I love my kitten so I mean maybe we could win. I didn’t expect to win, but I’m glad we did.

These donations can be very useful for organizations that depend on community support.

“So our organization generates 99% donations, so something like this is extremely important to what we do,” said UCAPS President Terra Walker.

UCAPS cares for more than 400 animals and is up for an even bigger prize of $ 25,000.
