Hossam Zaki, assistant secretary general of the Arab League, said in remarks to media on Sunday evening that the emergency meeting was called in accordance with an Egyptian-Jordanian initiative, noting that it was the first meeting opposite face to face for the AL. foreign ministers since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Zaki added that Arab states, including those that have normalized their relations with Israel, have the same stance towards the Palestinian cause, including a commitment to establish an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.
He said he expects consensus among Arab states on a proposed draft resolution that reaffirms the Arab nations’ steadfast positions on Palestine to be reached at the meeting.
Zaki added that the last LA foreign ministers meeting in September was not an example of a successful LA meeting as member states failed to reach a consensus position on the LA agreements. normalization recently signed by four Arab states with Israel.
The UAE, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan signed US-brokered normalization agreements with Israel in 2020. However, the four countries have maintained their commitment to support the Palestinian cause and a two-state solution.
