Animal Rescue Celebrates 100 Dogs Graduating From Lawton Prison Training Program

LAWTON, Oklahoma (KSWO) – Rainbow Bridge Can Wait Rescue and Adoption celebrated a milestone on Saturday – 100 dogs graduated from a program that allows inmates at the Lawton Correctional and Rehabilitation Facility to train dogs.

The program that allows inmates to train shelter animals in Lawton makes it easier to place these dogs in new loving homes, according to Carol Skinner of Rainbow Bridge Can Wait.

Skinner said the rescue is at its critical capacity right now, as many people who have worked from home during the pandemic and adopted pets to keep them company want to return the puppies now that they are back in the country. job.

“We had a 100% placement rate on dogs and then COVID hit, and that put us back a bit,” Skinner said. “Not only were the dogs dumped because there had been no spaying or neutering. Adoptions are right down there.

She wants people to know that the dogs in shelters are not broken or damaged. In fact, they can often make better pets than those sold by breeders.

“A lot of times when you take them out of the shelter they know what you have done for them and they become what I call Velcro dogs because they know what you have done and they appreciate what you have done”, Skinner said. noted.

The rescue began after Skinner adopted her own dog, and she wanted others to feel the company.

“When I started I started because of my dog and the relationship we had, and I wanted everyone to experience it, so I just started the rescue and I wanted everyone to experience it. world to experience what I had with mine, ”Skinner said.
