Animal Charity of Ohio volunteer sees dog for last time before adoption

CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) — The Animal Charity of Ohio’s Canfield Kennel held an adoption clinic on Sunday for their 50 dogs in need of homes.

But Animal Charity said it’s their volunteers who make it all possible – they come in every day, some even twice a day, to walk the dogs and give them much-needed attention.

“We couldn’t be more grateful for the team of volunteers we have at the moment, they go beyond anything we’ve ever seen here,” said Jane MacMurchy of Animal Charity.

MacMurchy said the time volunteers spend with the dogs helps build healthy bonds for them.

“These are the moments that dogs need to know they are loved and safe and volunteers do that,” MacMurchy said.

Edward Pomponio is one such dedicated volunteer. For the past eight months, Edward has been to the shelter twice a day to walk one of his favorite dogs, Pinky.

He said that over the time he helped care for her, they shared many special moments.

“It’s like they love you and you love them back and it’s unconditional love, 24/7 and you just can’t get enough of it,” Pomponio said.

On Sunday, Edward took Pinky for a last walk before she headed off to her forever home.

“You hate to leave them, but the goal is to give them a forever home and that’s going to happen today,” he said.

Pomponio said if someone had the opportunity to volunteer with the dogs, it was more rewarding than anyone could imagine. He plans to continue working with other dogs at the shelter until they find new homes.

On Sunday, a total of five dogs were adopted.
