ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) – The American Kennel Club says more pets go missing on July 4th weekend than at any other time of year.

Local animal rescue agencies are currently working to reunite lost animals with their owners.

“We have had a total of 36 stray animals, 18 of which were dogs and only two have been recovered so far,” said Tina Miller, Adoption Manager at Asheville Humane Society.

Miller says this is the number taken between Saturday July 3 and midday Monday July 5, a very high volume for a weekend.

“Well with the fireworks a lot of animals are really scared and they panic and run,” she said.

If your pet took off during the July 4th festivities, you should check out the Asheville Humane Society’s Lost and Found page on their website.

“Every time an animal comes through the shelter, we’re going to take a picture of it and post it on this page, and then if you see your animal, you can come in or call and report the lost property,” Miller explained. .

If you see a stray animal, notify Animal Control.

Miller said that your pet’s microchip is a great way to protect it.

“If your pet is picked up and taken to a shelter or to a vet the first thing they do is check for a microchip and if you have a microchip in your pet and your information is up to date they will call you right away after.

Animals are kept at the Buncombe County Animal Shelter for 72 business hours and if the owner does not contact the shelter, they are processed for adoption by the Asheville Humane Society.
