15 dogs seized from Orange and Meriden in suspected dog fighting rings

Fifteen dogs have been seized from suspected dog fighting rings in Meriden and Orange following an investigation by a statewide organized crime task force, according to state police in the United States. Connecticut.

Eight dogs were found at a residence in Meriden at the end of July, resulting in three arrests. The investigation then focused on an Orange house on Tuesday where seven dogs were found chained to their cages in an outdoor kennel, state police said.

Both searches stemmed from an investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department in New York City that was investigating an active dog fighting union, state police said.


At Orange’s home, police found numerous items indicating the dogs were used for fighting, officials said. The dogs have been seized and are in the care and custody of the state Department of Agriculture. The dogs will remain at Milford Animal Control, state police said.

Criminal charges related to cruelty to animals are planned, police said.

The remaining eight dogs were found on July 31 at a house on Britannia Street in Meriden. There, detectives seized numerous items associated with dog fighting, including shock collars, weighted harnesses, whips and scales, state police said.

Detectives also found a homemade dog fight ring and breaker sticks, which are used to break up dog fights, which contained dog blood and fur, police said.

The eight dogs were removed from a makeshift kennel at the rear of the property. The dogs received veterinary care for injuries consistent with dogfighting, state police said.

On September 27, state police, along with Bridgeport and Meriden Police, charged three people in connection with the dogs found at Meriden’s residence.

Getulio Vargas Macedo, 46, of Bridgeport, Jose Rivera 42, of Meriden, and Nelson Rivera, 43, also of Meriden, were charged with hit and run in court at the time, police said. the state.
